Cremation vs Burial: Which Is Cheaper?
Cremation is generally significantly cheaper than burial in Australia, primarily because cemetery plot and headstone costs are avoided. In major cities, a burial plot alone can cost $5,000-$20,000+ before any other funeral costs.
Direct Cremation — The Most Affordable Option
Direct cremation (also called simple cremation) involves no formal funeral service — the deceased is cremated shortly after death and the ashes returned to the family. A separate memorial celebration of life can still be held at any time and location chosen by the family, often at no cost if held at home or a park.
What Happens to the Ashes?
- Kept in an urn at home
- Scattered at a meaningful location (check local rules — some locations require permits)
- Interred in a cremation memorial wall, garden bed or columbarium
- Scattered at sea (licensed scatter-at-sea services available in most states)
